Reports in Florida newspapers today say sluggish ticket sales may hinder plans by President-elect Barack Obama supporters to travel to his inauguration on the Regal Empress. The "Yes We Can 2009 Cruise" has not drawn enough bookings to meet the minimum requirement of the ship's owner, Imperial Majesty Cruise Line, according to the Miami Herald and South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

The charter was being organized with Chicago-based HotelBox. The ship can carry 1,100. Starting fares are from $1,999 for the 8-day cruise – with special rates for Obama volunteers. According to the newspapers, a minimum of 300 full-priced fares is needed to make the cruise a go. The deadline for sales was Friday. Word is only 200 had signed up for the sailing and the cruise could be canceled at any time – the booking website was still active, however. The Sun-Sentinel said South Florida Obama supporters were trying to raise more than half a million dollars to make the cruise a reality.

The planned itinerary, round-trip from Fort Lauderdale, includes a two-night port call in Baltimore so passengers can attend inaugural festivities and a half-day in Freeport, Bahamas. The ship's regular route is Fort Lauderdale to the Bahamas.

Joey, maybe so. It’s hard to figure out how people think sometimes. Our company usually gives us the day off, but so far no word. I am taking the day off regardless. The traffic will be horrendous that day.
