My hubby and I are sailing out of Gavelston on Voyager Feb 22. We are arrving into Houston a couple of days before to do some sightseeing & visit Johnson Space Center. We are looking to rent a car at IAH and then return it near the Port before we board the ship.

Anyone know the area and/or have any suggestions?

HI, welcome and I do what I can to help...

I haven't sailed on the Voyager of the Seas, it was Carnival out of Galveston. But it was just last Jan. 10th.

Galveston has a long way to go to be back to pre-Hurricane shape.

You need to watch out for road repairs, missing road signs EVERYWHERE, dump trucks EVERYWHERE working on the beaches, non-working red lights everywhere, there will be just 4-way stops on Seawall...etc. basically a city trying to rebuid. Not all restaurants are open, but most are. The McDonald's is not open. If you go to the Sonic only about half the drive-in's are operational. we did and had to drive in and out several spots until we found a working one...

Now this is what I saw and experienced on Seawall Boulevard . but the road signs missing, road repairs, and 4-way stops is a problem all over.

Plus in and around Houston it is a mess...road repairs going on...but that may be normal.

The port of Galveston is fine and the customs area is fine. We had no problem getting on board or getting back through customs.

Boarding ship and disembarking went as smoothly as it did last year when we sailed on the Ecstasy.

The parking area is fine.

There is still a lot of damage just left on the side of the road...cars and boats just turned upside and left in ditches where the landed or pushed out of the way.

It was so sad to see all the homes on stilts destroyed that I saw last year that was so beautiful. Some are being rebuilt but others are just pile of rubble.

Hope I haven't depressed you...

I have to look at my scrapbooks, but I think we sailed on the Voyager of the Sea when it did the 5-day NW Pacific. If that's the case, it was a beautiful ship. I hope I can remember to look tonight when I get home. (Lately, if I don't write it down, or call my answering machine, I'm apt to forget!)
