Galveston cruisers can you help?

tmayor is asking a question on the Royal Caribbean board about the port and the Voyager of the Seas. Can someone help out????

I have sailed from the port but not on RCCL. What specific questions do they want to know about the port. There are long lines but they move quickly. After we disembarked, the luggage collection was somewhat chaotic and disorganized. We looked all over for one of my bags and i was getting really upset becaue it was the bag that I had put all the souvenir gifts in. After a while, they discovered that they had not put all the bags out and brought out several more racks of them. I think that part could be much better handled....

What I was asking about is if anyone is familiar with the area--- my husband and I are planning renting a car at IAH then, hopefully returning it closer to the port before we board the ship.

The cruise terminal is located in the downtown area of Galveston, so not sure what car rental companies would be nearby. You may check the port - I have seen a few who did have car rental return. Also, if you are spending the night in Galveston, you may check and see if your hotel has a shuttle to the port - they might be able to tell you where the nearest rental return location for you would be also so you could return it and then take their shuttle to the ship...

You can book and pay parking on-line for a discount on parking. Not much, but it will buy a couple drinks. Google Port of Galveston and you should be able to find info on parking.

Oh, I almost forgot. I'm not sure what the traffic is like since Hurricane Ike went through, but prior to the hurricane, traffic from the mainland across the causeway could be heavy. Allow plenty of time.

Tmayor - I checked online and it appears that Hertz has a location right at the cruise terminal in Galveston. I am sure that if you contact Hertz, they can tell you whether you can check the car in at that location, even though you are picking it up in Houston.

I think that Tmayor is wanting to return their rental car before leaving on the ship, instead of parking it. At least that is the way I read it, but I have been known to be wrong...

I haven't been on RCCI out of Galveston, but just got back in November from a trip on Carnival. At that time, traffic was very light to the island. One thing to look out for: If traffic lights aren't working (they weren't in November), treat all intersections with them as a 4-way stop!
