Rose: I've never found Europe to be anymore unsafe than the islands we usually cruise to. Use you head, stick to popular, well lit areas and you will be fine. We try and keep a low profile and not do the "Ugly American" things and have never even come close to a problem. In addition to your money, guard your passports, or better yet don't take them ashore at all.

We were speaking to a couple in Barcelona once and they told us that you can always tell the Americans, they wear tennis shoes with their shorts and jeans. The Europeans wear leather shoes or sandals if they are wearing shorts and leather shoes or boots with jeans..... so I guess they can identify us before we even open our mouths

Ed I was planning to take copies of our passports. I'm not really afraid, guess it's just fear of the unknown. Thanks for the advice.

Jackie I read stories about the ugly Americans........LOL. I just bought some leather moccasins to wear. Guess Howie will be wearing his regular shoes. No t-shirts either I've heard.......don't want to look too out of place. LOL

Rose: More and more Europeans are dressing like Americans. We used to avoid any American Logos on our outfits, but those same logos are everywhere in Europe. We still do not stay in hotels of American Chains, i.e. Hilton, Holiday Inn, etc. Most of the hotels we stay in have not seen an American in years. When I get hustled in English on the street, I reply in Russian or Turkish, that usually does the trick.

Rose, I have travelled all over the world, and the natives can spot a tourist a mile away regardless of what you wear, and believe me they are not looking at what you wear, but how you behave. My vacation wear consists of polo shirts, capri pants, tennis shoes and sandals. I also wear t-shirts and don’t feel out of place at all. I say wear whatever you feel comfortable in.

Thanks Carmen. I planned on a pretty simple wardrobe except the day of the Vatican, I understand you have to be dressed and appropriately covered. No problem with that.......all those years of catholic camp taught me alot. LOL I was wondering about capri's......glad to hear I can wear them as it should be quite warm. Thanks for the help.
