Joey, I have often wondered the same thing. Looking back, yes, I do believe that some of our cab drivers did purposely take us to seeder parts to make an impression on how poor their country was. Let's face it, a lot of these islands are 3rd world and if it wasn't for the cruise line, I doubt we would purposely vacation there.

I would imagine some do. I recall a tour guide in India asking me for more money and his rationale was "but you're from the United States." People do associate the USA, however inappropriately, as the land of great personal wealth and thus expect more in the way of gratuities. I recall reading that among Indians at least that people from the USA were the best tippers. The worst? Russians. Hey, don't shoot the messenger. It is just what I read but then again this was quite a while ago.

Personally I tip according to service rendered and this usually works out fine as my expectations aren't stratospheric. Just make a good effort and I'm fine with that. Honestly its in India where I get the most flack. That is people there seem to be the ones who ask for more and often its not very nice. I also experienced this sort of aggression in the DR too but only from baggage handlers at the airport. In the so. Pacific tipping is NOT the norm. When we were in Fiji there is no line on the bill to even add a tip. People there just don't expect it. Cultural differences I suppose. A Fijian told me that if you are in need your neighbors quite naturally take care of you so maybe one doesn't feel pressed to hawk for tips.

Debbie thanks for the great review. Glad you enjoyed the cruise even with the irritations.

Joey...We had a local at Montego Bay take us on a tour and showed us a drug lords house and yes, we were offered the opportunity to purchase some "local products"!!

Sounds like a great time Deb.

We have been on with John Heald as well - he is a really fun guy isn't he - and he makes it all appear so easy.

He is the best! At the Welcome Aboard Show he had some guests on stage that he was interviewing one at a time before they played this little "getting aquainted" game. He asked one man his name - he said 'Willy Banger'.....and his wife's name?....'Anita Banger'. OMG! You can just imagine the innuendos that flew. I don't think I ever laughed so hard in my life! There were times that I couldn't even breathe! Great memories of a great time!
