Rose - we have been twice. It's actually a pretty yucky city. Our personal tour guide suggested we stay away from it. So we spent the day on the Amalfi Coast..... TO DIE FOR!!!!! It is perhaps one of the most spectacular drives you will have ever been on. On the way back we spent about an hour and a half in Pompeii which was pretty interesting. But I would definitely suggest the Amalfi Coast. For people who like a lot more commercialism there is the boat ride over to the Isle of Capri - but it's jam packed with tourists and trinkets...... not our cuppa tea.

Rose: We've been there three times so far and never went in Naples. Did Capri (and we really enjoyed it). Have also done Amalfi and Pompeii, and enjoyed both of them also. Don't think you can go too far wrong.

Thanks Ed and Jackie. I've heard nothing but bad things about the city itself. I was thinking of taking the boat over to Capri but maybe will do the Amalfi coast instead. My ancestors were from that neck of the woods so thought that would be cool.

Still sitting on the fence so if anyone else has suggestion please feel free to add to this.

I really wasn't going to respond but after you last post i thought i would add my nickles worth..

We were told mind you this is a couple of years ago..(plus our neighbor is from Italy(Sicily) and she goes back frequently do not walk alone or with jewelry on in Naples the ship docks adjacent to town and you could be tempted to stroll through .. just be careful... I would suggest doing some-sort of organized tour (safety in numbers) or hire a private guide.. under no circumstances would I want to venture out on my own..

Rose.. our European cruise was so port extensive ...we really I should say I treated Naples like a sea day and stayed on board .. (I was worried the whole time David ventured out)

Joey that is the opinion I've been seeing too. Your right this is very port intensive and after 2 9 hour days (Rome and Pisa/Lucca privately) I'm not sure I want to do too much in Naples, however we have a sea day the next day so I'm sittling on the fence. I may just take the ships tour of Naples for a few hours and call it a day.

Please don't NOT tell me something! I value the opinions of everyone!

as do I...I understand.. I just am leery about sharing my insecurities because what one sees as danger another interprets as an adventure..

I agree with you but remember I defended Jamaica! LOL I love it there and have never had an issue.

This port makes me jumpy as does Barcelona but it won't stop me from doing things.......I'm a former NYer so I'll just apply that logic and I should be fine. I'll be researching some more this afternoon.
