This is a known issue relating to the upgrade.

Currently, users are able to upload 2 different photos to represent your account - 1 photo as your main account photo (displays on all of your content on the new site) and the 2nd photo is your avatar which only displays with your forum content.

This setup, I admit, is confusing, so within the next 24-48 hours this will be fixed...Here's how: All user photos (uploaded in the new part of the site) will be auto-copied over to your forums as your avatar. Your 'avatar,' as we are used to calling them, will now be your 'profile photo' and this 1 photo will represent your entire account, within both the forums and the social networking components of the site. You can change this photo by setting up your profile in the new part of the site.
