PegasusGM
Cruise reviews are like theater reviews. You can't please everyone. Most reviews are good guidelines in general and those by someone you know can be very helpful. In general they are helpful. I was all excited about our cruise last year on MSC until I read the horror stories on Cruise Critics. I suppose I should have noticed that "Critics" is the operative word! ;-) We had a grand time and almost ruined it by reading the reviews. A lot depends on if you see the glass half full or half empty. I'd much rather hear about what people enjoyed...like dogsledding in Alaska being worth every penny! Or taking my granddaughter to what turne dout to be a nude beach (oops!) I will say that Turkey on the ship at Thanksgiving was a little disappointing because I like my own turkey, but now I know. RayColey
I think that reading the reviews can be helpful, but I need to get beyond "the average". That is, if six out of eight people rate the food as bad, I certainly believe that in their opinion it was bad. I recall, however, that my brother could not eat anything but hamburgers and french fries well into his thirties (why he made it into his forties is beyond me). But obviously, we tailor our review toward what we are used to and are expecting. I also like to know the age of the people involved, especially when services, food, night life, activities and so forth are rated and an average rating is presented. I'm truly not much interested in the things a 22-year old is. I'm not in the shuffleboard set, but I don't climb walls (I did enough of that when I was an engineer!) I think the best review is one that comes from an individual whose tastes you understand and whose opinion you trust. Latch onto that review! Then book the cruise anyway. At least that way, you're offshore!
DebbieandJerry
Movie critics, book critics, all the same. What's that expression? Opinions are like A**holes. We all have one!
BSCorvette
Hopefully to answer your question. Yes I find cruise reviews helpful just as I would product reviews from Amazon or Best Buy. I balance the good with the disappointed. Some people don't like anything and unless someone is stuck directly up their behind to do their bidding they aren't satisfied. On the other hand those that find NOTHING wrong are mostly oblivious to their surroundings and haven't a clue of what's happening. I can enjoy this with a lot less pomp and ceremony than most. I'm easier to please and see things mostly thru the eyes of a poor stiff that's trying to do the work on the ship as the room steward or the waiter. The way some react to some issues, I wouldn't blame the personal to tell them to GTH. Most people put their shoes on one foot at a time and if you treat stewards and waiters with the same respect that one demands for themselves , one can watch the service just gets better. Later Jim Good call... always something goes wrong but don;t dwell on it... we are here to have a good time!
BSCorvette
Do you guys remember a year or two ago when the couple got banned from travelling RCL because of all the negative stuff they were complaining about? RCL thought they were trying to just get free vacations out of them. Makes me sit back and wonder what the motive is about a negative review. Surely there has to be a positive inter-mingled somewhere in there, don't ya think? Amen... some people think they MUSY complain to get "THEIR" share... they just want to be special I guess!
