Girl, 5, airlifted off cruise ship, taken to Victoria for medical help

A five-year-old girl was taken off the cruise ship Celebrity Mercury by helicopter Monday evening after she became ill.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Victoria dispatched a helicopter from CFB Comox to pick up the girl and take her to Victoria General Hospital.

She appeared to be suffering from a bowel obstruction.

The ship was between Port Hardy and Prince Rupert, heading north to Alaska, when the call for help was made.

Working in a hospital and in pediatrics, constipation and bowel obstruction with kids is not uncommon. Painful, annoying, frustrating, yes. Uncommon, no. How sad that her family vacation was interrupted.

Bowel obstruction can be caused by many things. It is not uncommon with children that have other special needs: CF, SpinaBifida, Downs Syndrome, short gut syndrome.

Improper diet and/or dehydration can also cause problems.
