Cozumel Taxis

Looked at the excursions to the Mayan ruins in Cozumel and decided that $80pp was a little steep for such a short ride. Also, far too much time at the ruins. I've been to Uxmal and Chichen Itza both, and it took less than four hours to climb over every rock at the place!

Question is, how much do taxis cost there? (Yes, I speak fluent spanish)

I've been to Coz many many times but haven't done the ruins. Since you speak Spanish I would think you would be able to negotiate a much better deal. Most of the taxi's have set fares but always agree on the $$ before you take off. Also make sure the driver speaks English well if Yuki doesn't speak Spanish. Howie speaks spanish but we've had drivers that don't speak English at all. Wish I could be more help.

That is a lot of help, Rose. My spanish is pretty much like my english, except smaller vocabulary. No gringo accent, either (I learned by hitching from Texas to Bolivia a number of years back - if you're traveling for six months, going eight thousand miles and start out with $300, you learn the language. As long as the taxis are plentiful, I shouldn't have much problem. Can you catch them in town, or is it only dockside?

We've had no problems "renting" taxis in Cozumel. One time we rented jeeps and drove ourselves. That was a blast. I speak Spanish, James speaks Spanish. Jerry and Marcy are as gringo as it gets. However, we used English to negotiate the taxi. We used English to tell the driver what we wanted. It wasn't until we were driving along that we started a conversation in Spanish. Most of the drivers that are at the port are very fluent in English. I think once you get in town is where you run into language barriers.

BTW: Car rental place was totally versed in English. Money was US dollars.

Never been to the ruins. Really have no desire to see them so I don't know what it would cost to drive yourselves there.
