JohnG
Finally got a chance to write my review of our July 11 sailing on the Uniworld River Royale on the Provence and Burgundy itinerary, up the Rhone and Saone Rivers in France, through the heart of the French wine country. It is posted here now. After 56 ocean cruises, this was our first river crusie....and we loved it. Just 125 people, wonderful food and service, dramatic and historic scenery in the country, villages, and cities. Learned a lot more about French wines from the Cote du Rhone and Burgundy, including Chateauneuf de Pape. And ended it with 2 days in Paris! The food! The wine! We had a great time! coloradocruisers
Excellent review John. Except for the initial stress when you thought you'd missed your bus, it sounds like you had a wonderful time. French wines aren't my favorite, but I can see us taking a cruise like this someday. DebbieandJerry
John, thank you so much for your honest assessement of a river cruise. I've been reading about them and have always been curious as to "how they measure up"

Joann
Heard there is nothing to do in the evenings on river cruises and that you must go thru several locks during which time you must stay in your cabin. Is this so?

JohnG
Heard there is nothing to do in the evenings on river cruises and that you must go thru several locks during which time you must stay in your cabin. Is this so? That's not true. Dinner is later in Europe, more like 7 or 8pm depending on the line. After dinner there is typically a musician for dancing, and if they are in port there may be local performance. The ship goes through locks all the time, and you are not confined to your cabin. You can be on deck if you like when going through locks. When going under bridges they can lower awnings and even the ship' bridge structure to ensure the pass under. It is fun to watch.
