CarolLyons
I have been looking around the site now for a few months. I joined as I have never been on a cruise, but I want to try one. I am trying to learn about cruising. I came close to booking a cruise but chickened out. I am just not sure of where on the ship to book the room. Also I have been know to have motion sickness and that worries me. Thank you for letting me share Carol L
KeithnRita
Carol, sea sickness was Rita's biggest fear before we took our first cruise in 1997. Twenty-one cruises later she has never been affected. As a precaution she does wear the patch. We always try to book our stateroom towards the center of the ship. Also, a lower deck is supposed to help. Just balance a pencil horizontally on your finger and you will see there is less motion at the center point. Also, welcome aboard the CruiseCrazies ship!
AndiD
Hi Carol, My husband and I were worried about that as well - I think everyone is a little leary about that until they take their first cruise. For our first cruise we brought the Dramamine and the wristbands - but realized we didn't need any of it. If you know you get a little upset with motion I think the patch would work well for you. The ships have good stabilizers now that really cut down on the rockin' and rollin' . And yes, I agree with the midship - lower level until you see how it goes. Try it - you'll like it....no make that try it - you'll LOVE it!
CarolLyons
Thanks all for the suggestions. I was thinking more of booking closer to the top, but after reading your suggestions I see I may have been making a mistake. Also do you all know if they sell the patches or wristbands on the boat? Or should I go to doctor at home and try and get a prescription. I am currently looking closely at taking a short one in April of 2012. I thought starting out with a short one might be best. cruisetarp
Welcome to CruiseCrazies Carol - I'm not sure about the wrist bands but they do have dramamine on the ship. The patch is only available through a prescription from your Dr. We must warn you about one thing before you take your first cruise. You will be hooked - just like the rest of us here. LOL We have all kinds of cruise experience here so please ask any questions you may have. Someone will surely have the answer for you. rogue
Hi Carol, We felt the same way about cruising before going the 1st time. Cindy, my wife, can get motion ill by walking down a street and turning her head. She does great on a cruise with Bonine. That is sold OTC in any pharmacy and is chewable. I get sick in elevators and use the patch. I have never been sick even going thru a hurricane like we did on our 1st cruise. Like MaryLou said, it is by prescription. You only have to change it evey 3 days. The ships these days are so stablized that you rarely feel any motion at all. Enjoy!
sailingrose
Hi Carol, Welcome aboard! Keith is right low deck and midship is best. You may want to also bring along some ginger snaps, they worked for my son as a child and they still do. Ginger ale also helps as well as green apples. The stablizers on new ships are amazing and you can barely feel the ships move these days. Try to pick a newer ship.......they will have better stabilizers. GottaCruz
Hi there, Carol. So glad that you found CruiseCrazies. As you see, the members here are so great- always welcoming and ready to answer any questions. I get motion sickness sometimes just going for a car ride but feel nothing on a cruise ship. I always do pack the Bonine, just in case and also take the wrist bands but haven't had to use them. I've gotten both in WalMart. I think it's a great idea to try a shorter cruise first just to ease your mind. You will go back for more. A lot more.
