This stunning photograph is the first sight Southampton has had of Royal Princess, the world`s newest cruise ship, due in the city early next month, as she powers through the waves.

Royal mum-to-be the Duchess of Cambridge will be the guest of honour at a spectacular dockside ceremony, during which she will officially name the vessel in Southampton on Thursday, June 13.

At present the 141,000 tonne ship is undergoing a rigorous series of sea trials off the coast of Italy, close to the Fincantieri shipyard where she was built at Monfalcone, near Trieste.

The prototype of a brand new class of vessels for the 21st century, Royal Princess will undertake two short preview cruises from Southampton before leaving for the Mediterranean where she will spend the summer months.

With enough cabins to accommodate up to 3,600 passengers, Royal Princess will have a giant open-air cinema, one of the biggest swimming complexes at sea, a dramatic light and water show and a glass floored walkway out over the waves from the top deck.

It was back in November, 1984 that an earlier ship, also called Royal Princess, was named by the late Diana, Princess of Wales in Southampton.

Wow, how time flies! It’s been something like four years (and eighteen cruises!) since the last time we sailed with Princess…

It’s high time we refreshed our memories – especially aboard one of their great new ships!
