Royal Caribbean International to be largest brand by 2021

The single largest cruise brand in the world, Carnival Cruise Lines, will be second largest by 2021, behind Royal Caribbean International, according to the 2013 Cruise Industry News Annual Report.

I always like hearing about new ships that are on the way but I don’t really keep track of them. It seems to me that we normally get the new ship announcements two to three years out. Maybe it’s longer than that, but it’s not eight years is it? I doubt the cruise lines themselves have firm plans as to what ships will be built let alone transferred, sold or retired between now and 2021!

Something is wrong here. The headline and the last line of the text contradict each other.

The headline says:

Royal Caribbean International to be largest brand by 2021

But the last line says: Overall, Carnival brands will have 44.3 percent of the worldwide capacity by 2021, compared to 45.5 percent today, and Royal Caribbean, 24.9 percent, up from 23.5 percent today.

Good catch John. And I also agree with Michael and Amy. Alot can happen in 8 years, including mergers and acquisitions that may not have been announced.

Did they forget to include Celebrity, as part of RCI, into that figure?
